Positive reactions follow announcement by Tunisia of intention to bid for 2010 Football World Cup
Tunis, 30 December 2002 (Tunisiaonline)
Several positive reactions have followed the announcement by the Tunisian Football Federation of "its intention to present its candidacy to host the 2010 football world cup”.
One such a reaction came from Mr. Othman Al Saad, secretary general of the Arab Football Union and Arab Sports Union, who welcomed Tunisia’s decision and pledged his support for the bid. He expressed his opinion that Tunisia is able to meet all FIFA’s requirements and be the first Arab country to host such a major international sports event.
The announcement of the Tunisian football federation’s intention to bid for the world cup came after a meeting, last Wednesday December 25th, during which Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali received the minister for sports, Abderrahim Zouari, and the minister for equipment, housing and land management, Slaheddine Belaid.
According to an official statement made public after the meeting, the Tunisian head of state agreed to the decision by the Tunisian Football Federation to announce its “intention to present its candidacy to host the 2010 football world cup in Tunisia."
The statement justified the decision by "the level attained by Tunisian sports and the modern sports facilities and installations and integrated infrastructure available in all sectors and all areas of the country, as well as the confidence placed in Tunisia by the world athletic community and Tunisia's success in hosting a number of major events.”
After having organized the last edition of the Mediterranean games, last September 2001, Tunisia will host the next African Nations Football Cup (CAN - 2004) and the 2005 Handball World Championship.
Several projects for the construction and maintenance of sports facilities are underway in preparation for both future events.
